“…These interactions have been observed in previous studies of coordination compounds with the unsubstituted 2-aminobenzimidazole ligand, where the -NH 2 gives place to intramolecular hydrogen bonding with the coordinated halides or acetates stabilized in the molecular structure [43,44]. Additionally, the sulfone group gives place to weak interactions, lp•••π contacts and, the presence of a phenyl group, yields π•••π stacking interactions [45].…”

“…Interestingly, the other oxygen of the same sulfone group is the one showing the intramolecular lone pair···π interaction (vide supra). This is relevant because in our previous work with alkylsulfonated ligands [44,45], when one oxygen of the sulfone group is depicting such interactions, the other oxygen does not show any other contact, not even weak hydrogen bonds. As mentioned above, adequate crystals for X-ray diffraction were easier to obtain with the sfabz ligand.…”

“…Beyond interactions between canonical amino acids and nucleosides, the greater insight into π–π interactions obtained from this study can be applied to better comprehend and develop ligands and drugs that bind to nucleic acids and/or proteins ( 69 , 70 ). Furthermore, understanding the complex π-interactions that occur between biomolecules can provide greater insight into the operation, and possibly the design, of unique ligands for inorganic complexes that can be used as catalysts and materials ( 71–73 ).…”

“…In previous reports we have discussed the importance of the lone pair⋯π interaction between an oxygen from the SO 2 group and the imidazolic ring. 15,36 This interaction can be found in compounds where the heterocycle is highly polarized, e.g. when coordinating to a metal ion.…”

“…Copper( ii ) tinidazole compounds, [Cu II (tnz) 2 X 2 ] (X = Cl, Br), presented distorted tetrahedral geometries and showed the ability to form intramolecular bifurcated lone pair S–O⋯π, with oxygen from the sulfone group with the nitroimidazole ring, which contributed to the stability of the compounds in solid state and solution. 15 The tetrahedral structures in Fig. 1 have two halogen atoms (chlorine or bromide) and two tinidazole ligands coordinated to the metal ion.…”
