Logic Gates Based in Asymmetric Couplers: Numerical Analysis

Abstract: In this work, we present a numerical investigation of the transmission and switching of fundamental solitons in asymmetric nonlinear directional couplers, constructed with dispersion decreasing fibers (DDF). In this configuration, the coupler 217 218 J. S. De Almeida et al.consists of two separated parallel fibers, one with a DDF profile and the other with a constant profile. We obtained the characteristics of transmission, extinction ratio, and compression factor of the device. The truth tables for the logic g… Show more

“…While emerging asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switches and Internet Protocol (IP) routers can be used to switch data using the individual channels (typical rates of 2.5 or 10 Gb/s) within a WDM link, this approach requires tens or even hundreds of switch interfaces to terminate a single link with a large number of channels (Vlachos et al 2003). In this way, various optical devices have been studied for the all-optical signal processing, all-optical logical gates, ultrahigh-speed optical telecommunications, alloptical switching, RF photonic signal processing (Vlachos et al 2003;Boscolo et al 2008;Stampoulidis et al 2007;Menezes et al 2007a;Li et al 2008;Menezes et al 2007bMenezes et al , 2009Almeida et al 2007;Sobrinho et al 2008;Zoiros et al 2006;Clavero et al 2004;Fraga et al 2006;Sobrinho et al 2007Sobrinho et al , 2002bSobrinho et al , 2004Onaka et al 2008;Veeriah et al 2007;Sobrinho et al 2006a;Sobrinho et al 2002a;Gao et al 2006;Menezes et al 2006;Ferreira et al 2009), ultrafast metrology, microwave engineering, image processing and optical computing and already several functions can be accomplished within the optical domain, such as optical power division, ultrafast optical switching, optical connections with photonic gateways and all-optical multiplexing (Vlachos et al 2003;Boscolo et al 2008;Stampoulidis et al 2007;Menezes et al 2007a;Li et al 2008;Menezes et al 2007bMenezes et al , 2009Almeida et al 2007;Sobrinho et al 2008;Zoiros et al 2006;Clavero et al 2004;Fraga et al 2006;…”

“…To meet the increasing demand for high-speed communications, researchers are replacing traditional electrical components with optical switching components, utilizing fundamental building blocks such as AND, OR, NOT, XOR, and XNOR logic gates. A variety of devices, including the Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) [1], Micro-ring Resonator (MRR) [2], Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) [3], Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) [4], Photonic Crystal Waveguide (PCW) [5], and Directional Coupler [6][7][8][9][10][11], are available for constructing All-optical logic gates and switches. Photonic switching involves manipulating optical signals between different modes, relying on the intensity-dependent dynamics of the optical beam.…”
