Logic Analysis: Testing Program Theory to Better Evaluate Complex Interventions

Abstract: Evaluating complex interventions requires an understanding of the program’s logic of action. Logic analysis, a specific type of program theory evaluation based on scientific knowledge, can help identify either the critical conditions for achieving desired outcomes or alternative interventions for that purpose. In this article, we outline the principles of logic analysis and its roots. We then illustrate its use with an actual evaluation case. Finally, we discuss the advantages of conducting logic analysis prio… Show more

“…This facilitates multidisciplinary and cross-sector knowledge translation and the assessment of the program intervention theory: its usability, validity, credibility, integrity, etc. Logic models are characterized by two research questions ( Rey et al, 2011 ): a. What attributes to systematize for an intervention to have the desired effects?…”

“…The goal was to find activities that favor positive feedback loops and elicit stakeholder engagement. A logic model was performed early in the preimplementation stage to test the program theory with stakeholders ( Boudreau LeBlanc et al, 2022 ) and thus improve the evaluation of the intervention with collaboration and criticism ( Rey et al, 2016 ). Instead of covering the entire program (as common), the model focuses on one of its parts: initial incentives for voluntary participation to launch the program and increase the chances of success.…”

“…Understanding how and why a social intervention is intended to work is needed to study the program adequately (Rey et al, 2011). In addition, guidance regarding program theory development is almost exclusively confined to the program evaluation literature (Chen, 1990; Funnell & Rogers, 2011; Rossi et al, 2004), with little mention outside of this field.…”
