Log Analysis in Formations with Complex Lithologies

Abstract: Here is a method of interpreting well logs for formations having lithologies that are mixtures of silica, limestone, dolomite, anhydrite, and clay, or that are mixtures of any two specified minerals and clay. Analysis is made for clay content, matrix density, porosity, hydrocarbon saturation, and secondary-porosity index. Introduction During the past several years interpretation methods have been developed to obtain porosity and lithology from combinations of… Show more

“…The shale corrected Konen-Bateman (PHIT_DN_KB) method (Konen and Bateman, 1977) involved a shale correction based on the Poupon, et al (1970) shaly-sand model. This method required identification of a shale endpoint on a crossplot of a density vs. neutron (limestone matrix) porosity.…”

“…Clay corrections are performed using logic based on the Poupon, et al (1970) shaly-sand model. The algorithm used iterative logic to calculate a total fluid density that results in equal porosities for both the density and neutron porosity response equations.…”

“…The concept of this technique is easy, yet its implementation is difficult 3,4 . Plotting neutron and density logs on the neutrondensity cross-plot will display clean sand points along the quartz sandstone line.…”

“…A practical approach to data analysis would be to use computers. Dawson-Grove and Palmer (1968) and Poupon, Hoyle, and Schmidt (1970) have discussed computer application in detail and the major service companies offer this service. Connolly (1968) indicated that the main causes of poor quality logs are the variety of logs available, the difference in ages of the wells that have been logged, and the many instrumental and operator errors that occur when the logs are made.…”
