Kraków Spadzista trench C2: New research and interpretations of Gravettian settlement

“…The presence of numerous backed blades could be connected with the transport of hunted animals to this locus, and the further processing of carcass parts. A lack of the geometric tool forms and microgravettian points is one of the characteristic features of this inventory e in contract to other Late Gravettian site such as Jaksice II, Pet rkovice, Milovice and Tren canske Bohuslavice (Oliva, 1999;Za ar, 2007;Nov ak, 2008;Wilczy nski et al, 2015). Only a single fragment of a rectangle was discovered at the trench C2, and it represents a rather irregular form.…”

“…This conclusion is highly important because now the existence of Early Gravettian settlement in Lesser Poland is problematic. From this period in Lesser Poland there are two cave sites from which extraordinary osseous inventories and human remains were described e Obłazowa and Borsuka Cave (Valde-Nowak, 2003;Wilczy nski et al, 2015), and while both assemblages provide provocative data, their connection with Early Gravettian settlement is unclear. We state this on the basis of the early radiocarbon dates of Obłazowa Cave, the insubstantial lithic inventories, and the ambiguous stylistic ornamentation of the osseous artefacts at both cave sites.…”
