“… 33 In terms of addiction memory, engram cells have been identified in several brain regions, such as drug reward memory engram cells located in ventral CA1, nucleus accumbens core (NAcC) and anterior limbic cortex, 19 , 34 and drug withdrawal memory engram cells located in the dentate gyrus and nucleus accumbens. 35 , 36 However, as far as the BLA is concerned, there is still a lack of studies showing the presence of drug withdrawal memory engram cells in this region of the brain. To study how MEC -BLA neurons participate in context-induced retrieval of morphine withdrawal memory, firstly, we examined whether there were drug withdrawal memory engram cells in the BLA and then examined the influence of the inhibition of MEC −BLA neurons, using chemogenetic method, on context-induced reactivation of morphine withdrawal memory engram cells of the BLA.…”

“…Multiple recent studies, including our own yet-to-be-published findings, have endeavored to manipulate hippocampal-dependent contextual memory by activating LC-hippocampus pathways to promote cognitive and behavioral flexibility that might be compromised in certain models associated with severe/chronic stress or repeated drug use during periods of new learning. For instance, the LC is implicated during early extinction, and optical activation of LC to DG projection neurons just before administering a recall-extinction procedure in morphine-dependent mice, resulted in enhanced extinction ( Dai et al, 2023 ). We are also currently exploring the role of LC activation on fear memory reconsolidation ( Asgarali et al, 2023 ) and the enhancement of extinction learning.…”

“…One of the challenges faced in understanding memory is how to visualize and capture the ever-changing memory traces in the brain at the cellular level. In this regard, the concept of engram cells provided scientists with a meaningful target to study memory (Buhusi and Buhusi, 2023 ; Dai et al, 2023 ; Gall et al, 2023 ; Ghandour and Inokuchi, 2023 ; Hammack et al, 2023 ; Jung et al, 2023 ; Kenna et al, 2023 ; Lee C. et al, 2023 ; Mohanta et al, 2023 ; Nomoto et al, 2023 ; Okray et al, 2023 ; Osanai et al, 2023 ; Park et al, 2023 ; Rahsepar et al, 2023 ; Schott, 2023 ; Terranova et al, 2023 ; Wilmerding et al, 2023 ). In the 1950's, certain scientists could not identify engram cells due to a lack of technology (Lashley, 1931 , 1950 , 1963 ).…”
