“…4 Case reports from 2006 have shown an unexpected high prevalence of rupture and silicone leakage in women with implants from the French manufacturer Poly Implant Prothèse. 5,6 Because of these reports, the manufacturer was inspected by the French health watchdog Agence Française de Sé-curité sanitaire des Produits de Santé in 2009. It was found that the silicone gel used in these implants from the manufacture year 2001 onward was unauthorized for medical use and was approved instead for use in mattresses and cushions.…”

“…How spilt or migrated silicone is absorbed and distributed systemically is not well understood, but it has been found not only in fibrous breast capsules (both within macrophages and extracellularly) and in nearby locations such as axilla and abdominal fat [18], but also in macrophages in joint synovium and skin [16] and in liver [19]. Distribution via the lymph system is suggested by observations of silicone granulomas in lymph nodes [20], distribution via the bloodstream by observations of silicone emboli in vascular territories following subcutaneous injection of liquid silicone [14,21]. In the case described here, the histological evidence of silicone in pulmonary vasculature and alveolar histiocytes suggests that the silicone had reached the lung via the bloodstream, probably with the involvement of the reticulo-endothelial system.…”

“…Nevertheless, locoregional silicone spread following cohesive gel silicone implant rupture has been already reported [13]. Awareness of such rare complications remains important.…”
