Hamsters are often chosen as companion animals but are also a group of animals frequently subjected to laboratory tests. As there are no scientific publications providing information on the anatomical architecture of the brachial plexus of the Djungarian hamster, this study analyses the structure of this part of the nervous system of this species. It is important to know the details of this structure not only for cognitive reasons, but also due to the increasing clinical significance of rodents, which are often used in scientific research. The study was conducted on 55 specimens. Like in humans, the brachial plexus of the Djungarian hamster has three trunks. The following individual nerves innervating the thoracic limb of the Djungarian hamster: the radial nerve, median nerve, ulnar nerve, musculocutaneous nerve, axillary nerve, suprascapular nerve, thoracodorsal nerve, cranial pectoral nerves, caudal pectoral nerve, lateral thoracic nerve, long thoracic nerve, and subscapular nerves. Similarly to other mammals of this order, the brachial plexus of the Djungarian hamster ranges widely (C5-T1). However, its nerves are formed from different ventral branches of the spinal nerves than in other mammals.

Dentre os pets não convencionais, os coelhos são animais frequentemente apreciados por deterem um temperamento dócil, entretanto, suas particularidades anatômicas e fisiológicas predispõem a afecções odontológicas, necessitando eventualmente de intervenções cirúrgicas e anestésicas. Tendo vista que não existem relatos sobre a aplicabilidade clínica do bloqueio do nervo maxilar para procedimento cirúrgico nesta espécie, objetivou-se avaliar a eficácia da técnica em Coelho da Nova Zelândia (Oryctolagus cuniculus), de 4 anos, pesando 4,1 kg, atendido no Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Federal do Paraná em março de 2022. Após avaliação clínica e exame radiográfico, foi constatado crescimento retrógrado e instituído como a exodontia de molariformes superiores. Como medicação pré-anestésica, foi administrada a associação de dexmedetomidina (30 ug/kg), metadona (0,5 mg/kg), e midazolam (1 mg/kg). Posteriormente, a indução anestésica foi realizada com propofol (3 mg/kg) e sua manutenção com isoflurano e propofol. Visando analgesia preemptiva, foi realizado o bloqueio do nervo maxilar por referência anatômica com cloridrato de lidocaína sem vasoconstritor (3 mg/kg). Durante o transoperatório, parâmetros fisiológicos como a frequência cardíaca e respiratória, pressão arterial sistólica, média e diastólica, oximetria de pulso, dióxido de carbono ao final da expiração e temperatura retal foram mensurados e posteriormente registrados. Por fim, a técnica de bloqueio do nervo maxilar mostrou-se eficaz para o procedimento proposto, uma vez que foram inexistentes as alterações paramétricas de nocicepção no transoperatório. Entretanto, estudos mais amplos, controlados e com maior número de animais precisam ser realizados a fim de garantir sua indicação, bem como maiores esclarecimentos a respeito da aplicabilidade no emprego de anestésicos locais de longa duração para analgesia pós-operatória nessa espécie.

A 9‐year‐old, male, 0.69 kg, corn snake was referred for enucleation of its right eye. Pre‐anaesthetic medication consisted of butorphanol (1 mg/kg) and alfaxalone (10 mg/kg) intramuscularly. Orotracheal intubation was then performed. General anaesthesia was maintained with sevoflurane in 100% oxygen. During the general anaesthesia, the snake was manually ventilated. At the end of the surgery, the orbit was packed with a haemostatic sponge soaked in 0.75 mg/kg of 0.5% bupivacaine. Meloxicam (0.4 mg/kg) was administered subcutaneously as a part of the multimodal analgesic protocol. Total anaesthetic time was 90 minutes. Following 2 minutes of sevoflurane discontinuation, the snake started moving and the trachea was extubated. The snake displayed normal behaviour, although a short period of hypothermia was suspected in recovery. No other complications were encountered. The snake was discharged 4 hours after the end of surgery; meloxicam (0.2 mg/kg) was prescribed once daily, orally, for 14 days.
