Locally embedded presages of global network bursts

Abstract: Spontaneous, synchronous bursting of neural population is a widely observed phenomenon in nervous networks, which is considered important for functions and dysfunctions of the brain. However, how the global synchrony across a large number of neurons emerges from an initially nonbursting network state is not fully understood. In this study, we develop a state-space reconstruction method combined with high-resolution recordings of cultured neurons. This method extracts deterministic signatures of upcoming global… Show more

“…In fact, this is what we found with our model: a burst becomes practically unforeseeable going some 100–200 ms in the past. This result is in contrast with the impressive findings reported in 32 , in which the authors, on recordings similar to the ones used in this work, through a new model-free method based on state-space reconstruction, were able to predict the occurrence of a burst even 1 s in advance. We applied the state-reconstruction method on our data with negative results, in agreement with what we found with our model.…”

“…Finalizing the description of the qualitative picture, it is worth noting that the suggested concepts and the schematic of recruitment process during initiation of a PS are generally consistent with previous findings [35,41,42,48,73,77,[179][180][181][182]. In particular, the concept of 'trigger' neurons is closely related to the neurons of 'nacelles' [35], 'early-to-fire' neurons [42], 'major burst leaders' [48], 'leader' neurons [180][181][182], and 'critical' neurons [73].…”

“…However, despite the fact that the origin, stability, and the functional role of the regime of spontaneous, irregularly repetitive PSs have been intensively studied [42,51,52,55,[58][59][60][64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78], some key aspects, including a mechanistic explanation of PSs initiation and the nucleation effect, are yet to be unraveled. Fortunately, there are two fostering factors.…”

“…proportional to the synaptic interaction between the two neurons [31]. Here, the goal of applying the method of cross-mapping is to study interactions that are intrinsic to the V1 network, excluding the influence of the shared input on the interaction, an analysis that is helpful for teasing apart the sources of the choice signal.…”
