Localized surface plasmon resonance of single silver nanoparticles studied by dark-field optical microscopy and spectroscopy

Abstract: Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) with different shapes and disk-shaped Ag NP pairs with varying interparticle distance is studied using dark-field optical microscopy and spectroscopy (DFOMS). Disk-, square-, and triangular-shaped Ag NPs were fabricated on indium tin oxide-coated glass substrates by electron beam lithography. The LSPR spectra collected from single Ag NPs within 5×5 arrays using DFOMS exhibited pronounced redshifts as the NP shape changed from disk to square a… Show more

“…Generally, the LSPR wavelength of a metal NP will blue shift when it changes from an anisotropic shape into an isotropic sphere along with the decrease of particle size. 13 However, the scattering light of an AgNC shifted to a longer wavelength before it disappeared in our work. These illogical phenomena might be attributed to the change of the surface status of AgNCs at the initial stage of the etching process.…”

“…Also, because of the higher charge densities on the larger nanoparticle, the intensity of LSPR increases. When two nanoparticles are placed next to each other closer than a distance equal or smaller than 2.5 times of the particle diameter, interparticle near field coupling occurs [4,17,47]. Oppositely, the particle behaves as a single-particle dipole mode.…”

“…When the aspect ratio (the ratio of the diameter of nanoparticles to its height) of the disk-like shaped nanoparticles increases, the wavelength increases [10,11,14,17].…”

“…The color change occurs due to the effect of superficial plasmon resonance (SPR) and the reduction of AgNO 3 (Li et al, 2012). SPR refers to the collective oscillation of free electrons in the metallic nanoparticles when they interact with electromagnetic radiation (Cao et al, 2011;González et al, 2014;Al Juraifani and Ghazwani, 2015).…”
