Localized Proton Spectroscopy without Water Suppression: Removal of Gradient Induced Frequency Modulations by Modulus Signal Selection

Abstract: are removed. This is demonstrated by processing proton MRS spectra acquired without water suppression collected from a phantom containing metabolites at concentrations comparable to those in human brain and from a human subject using two different localization methods (PRESS and Chemical Shift Imaging PRESS-(CSI)). The results obtained illustrate the ability of this approach to remove the spurious peaks. The corrected spectra can then be fit accurately. This is confirmed by the results obtained from both the r… Show more

“…The NWS spectral lines restored after motion correction exhibit narrower line width (full width at half maximum ϳ10 Hz) than the WS spectral lines (full width at half maximum ϳ15 Hz). As a side note, some NWS sidebands arising from gradient coil oscillations (10,21) were visible in the spectra (arrows in Fig. 7).…”

“…The NWS MRS is potentially superior to WS MRS in several ways (9)(10)(11)(12). First, the metabolite signals in NWS MRS are not distorted by the water suppression pulses (13).…”

“…One disadvantage of using 1 H MRSI without WS is that audio vibrations from the gradient coils induce frequency modulations of the water signal that then produce several sidebands in the MR spectra. These sidebands increase noise in metabolite signals [10,19]. Although several methods have been proposed to suppress these sidebands [8,10,19], at present we suggest that our method for signal combination across coil elements should be applied only with data acquired using a long TE, thereby minimizing the presence of sidebands.…”

In our experiment at TE=288 ms, the noise levels in individual coil elements for MRSI without WS were <3% greater than noise levels in MRSI with WS.…”
