Localized Positronium‐Like States in Ionic Crystals

Abstract: The localized positronium-like states in ionic crystals are considered as positron-electron pair bound states in the Coulomb field of the charge 2. The system characteristics are evaluated as a function of the magnitude 2. The calculated data are in agreement with the experimental ones in alkali halides for charges Z < 0.7. The properties and the formation possibility of the positronium-like states in ionic crystals are discussed.

“…This is similar to the well known Jastrow approximation 14 for the pair wave function F. The adequacy of the Jastrow approximation can be tested by considering a model Hamiltonian of a positron-electron pair in a Coulomb field produced by a point charge Z eff . By using the variational Monte Carlo in the Jastrow approximation, 15 good agreement with a more accurate energy calculation employing Hylleraas-type wave functions 16 is obtained for 0.5ϽZ eff Ͻ1.…”
