Localization with Sr85 of Spinal Metastases in Mammary Cancer and Changes in Uptake after Hormone and Roentgen Therapy: A Preliminary Report

Abstract: Skeletal metastases are often not demonstrable in the roentgenogram until bone destruction is considerable. This applies particularly to the spine. A comparison between roentgen and postmortem findings, as well as experimental studies by BABAIANTZ, have shown that the bone decalcification must reach about 50 % before it is evident in the roentgen film.Investigations with so-called osseophil isotopes in recent decades have contributed considerably to our knowledge of the mineral metabolism of the skeleton. Such… Show more

“…After early trials, using '?P and 45Ca, a breakthrough came by the introduction of the gamma-emitting radionuclide "Sr. Gynning et al (41) used this radionuclide in external detection of spinal metastases. Cederqvist (42) performed retention studies in patients with and without widespread malignant skeletal disease using a whole body counter.…”

“…Strontium-85 was found to localize readily in areas of osteoblastic activity present in primary and metastatic bone lesions (8). However, the long half-life and energetic photon of 85-Sr were not satisfactory, and the search continued for a better bone imaging agent.…”
