Localization of masticatory motoneurons in the cat and rat by means of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase

Abstract: Topographical localization of monotoneurons supplying the masticatory muscles was investigated in the cat and rat, utilizing retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase. Following injection of horseradish peroxidase in each masticatory muscle, motoneurons labelled with peroxidase were seen to be aggregated into a cluster within the motor nucleus of the trigeminal nerve. Such clusters of peroxidase-motoneurons innervating each masticatory muscle were demarcated more sharply in kittens than in adult an… Show more

“…In addition, the positions of masseter motoneurons within Mo5 observed in our experiments were similar to those noted in previous studies (Mizuno et al 1975;Weijs 1996;Fay and Norgren 1997), indicating that PRV-BA had not been transported by efferents innervating other muscles. Furthermore, the locations of infected medullary neurons outside of the VN and PH were similar to those reported in a manuscript by Fay and Norgren (Fay and Norgren 1997), who also injected PRV-BA into the masseter muscle.…”

“…In accordance to Mizuno et al, the masseteric labeled motoneurons were located in the dorsolateral part of the trigeminal motor nucleus (Mizuno et al 1975). No contralateral neuronal labeling was observed.…”

“…1B shows photomicrographs of a subset of the injection sites. Furthermore, b-CT-labeled motoneurons were observed in the lateral and ventral portions of the ipsilateral Mo5 in every rat; these portions of the nucleus have been demonstrated to contain masseter motoneurons (Mizuno et al 1975;Lynch 1985;Giaconi et al 2006). …”
