“…This result suggests that endogenous ABA in grapes might be influenced by the proportions of blue and red light in sunshine that differ with the season (Kamuro et al 2003) in addition to the LED irradiation administered at night. Previous studies showed that ABA in the leaves may be transported to the clusters via the phloem vessels (Shiozaki et al 1999;Antolin et al 2003). However, in our study, endogenous ABA and the expressions of VvNCED1, an upstream enzyme for ABA synthesis, in the red-LED treatment administered to the cluster were significantly higher than in the LED treatment administered to the leaves.…”

“…In our experiment, however, increases in ABA con cen tra tion, either in fl esh or in seeds, occurred one to four weeks after veraison in all treatments. Our results showed that there was not a strong correlation be tween veraison and ABA changes, sug gest ing that ABA may not be the only trigger for veraison in the grape berry and may play a role in stimulating nutrient ac cu mu la tion (Ndungʼu et al, 1996) and enhancing the berry ripening during late Stage III (Shiozaki et al, 1999). Our fi ndings em pha size the necessity of further research in this area.…”

“…In grapes, exogenous ABA stimulates skin coloration (Kataoka et al, 1982;Peppi et al, 2006) and anthocyanin synthesis in grape cell cultures (Gagne et al, 2010). ABA accumulation in the berry during ripening takes place in two ways; ABA is synthesized in the berry itself (Coombe, 1976) and also transferred from the leaves to the bunch via the phloem (Mullins et al, 1992;Shiozaki et al, 1999). The transferring and accumulation of ABA are promoted by trunk girdling, which has been used as a solution to poor coloration (Loveys and Kriedemann, 1974;During, 1978;Zhang et al, 2003).…”
