“…In contrast, HINT sentences were presented from the front with multitalker noise delivered through multiple surrounding loudspeakers, a setup that is more likely to evaluate true binaural processing conditions (i.e., summation and integration effects). Our findings support the contention that Baha amplification benefits monaural listening when the speech and noise sources are spatially separated (23), but that there is no consistent benefit when the noise field is diffuse and speech is from the front. Although the HINT setup tapped into a more difficult listening situation, we did not allow the patients to turn their head as they might in this situation in the real world and thus compensate by using their better normal-hearing ear.…”

“…The majority of these studies either focused on satisfaction following Baha-mediated rehabilitation or on comparing satisfaction resulting from various means of rehabilitation for unilateral deafness [Hol et al, 2010]. Since 2005, we have been offering Baha hearing aids for treating unilateral deafness because the literature suggests it is an effective means for rehabilitating this condition [Niparko et al, 2003;Hol et al, 2004Hol et al, , 2005Wazen et al, 2005]. We have implemented a series of preoperative audiometric tests adapted from the selection method proposed by Vaneecloo et al [2000] in order to show our patients the type of hearing improvement they can expect from Baha.…”
