Localised acquired trichorrhexis nodosa of the scalp hair induced by a specific comb and combing habit - A report of three cases

Abstract: Trichorrhexis nodosa is a hair shaft disorder often encountered in clinical practice. Acquired trichorrhexis is commoner of the two types and is most often due to weathering from physical or chemical causes. We report three representative cases of localized acquired trichorrhexis encountered in our clinic attributable to a specific comb, used commonly in Kerala, a Southern state of India.

“…Trichorrhexis nodosa is a common hair shaft disorder characterized by intermittent whitish swelling nodes of the hair fibers and splitting of the tips that make the hair snap off easily. Trichorrhexis nodosa may have a genetic etiology but appears to result from repeated physical and chemical trauma, such as hair relaxer and blow drying . Although hair transplantation is a safer procedure than other surgical corrections for alopecia, mild or severe complications can occasionally result from malpractice or poor quality control .…”
