“…To date, however, there is no clear way to differentiate maize consumed as a meal or in the form of chicha from carbon and nitrogen stable isotope data. Some preliminary analyses show enrichment in δ 18 O as a result of the boiling involved in the preparation process of chicha (Gagnon et al, ). However, an absence of enrichment in δ 18 O, which is beyond the scope of this paper, does not eliminate the possibility that Maize was consumed in the form of chicha, since studies in Northern Chile and other Andean regions shows that the local production of maize chicha included beverages that were uncooked.…”

“…Another possibility is that the enriched δ 18 O values in humans may suggest that communities were boiling and/or fermenting beverages. As water is boiled and sits during fermentation, the lighter 16 O evaporates, resulting in enriched δ 18 O values (74,79). These considerations help to clarify why the δ 18 O values from enamel carbonates are enriched relative to water in the region, further demonstrating that these individuals did not spend their childhoods in distant locales or higher altitudes.…”

“…They found little difference in residence between individuals buried in the urban sector and Huaca de la Luna but temporally increasing residential variability among the sacrificial victims. However, these interpretations must be supported by additional analysis, given the effects that chicha consumption can have on human δ 18 O values (Gagnon, Andrus, Ida, & Richardson, 2015; Gagnon & Juengst, 2018). Finally, Gagnon's (2019) analysis of stress indicators suggests that individuals buried in the huaca enjoyed slightly better health than those interred in the urban sector.…”
