Local structure analysis of boron-doped graphite by soft x-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation

Abstract: The local structure of boron-doped highly oriented graphite films was determined via soft x-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. Analysis of the BK and CK x-ray emission spectra using the discrete variational-Xa molecular orbital method clarified that boron atoms are chemisorbed onto graphite by substituting for carbon atoms in the carbon hexagonal rings. Compared to graphite, boron-doped graphite exhibits spectral differences in the higher edge of the CK x-ray emission spectru… Show more

“…In a previous study, Hanafusa et al reported B-K emission spectra for a high-temperature synthesized B-doped HOGF [7]. According to their quantum chemical consideration, both the main peak of 182 eV and the high-energy satellite peak of 185 eV are attributed to π orbitals, and only the tailing on the low energy side is attributed to σ orbitals.…”

“…Five B-containing crystalline materials were prepared; B granules (3–7 mm) and B 2 O 3 powder were purchased from Kojundo Chemical Laboratory Co., Ltd. FeB and Fe 2 B (500 μm in diameter) were purchased from Goodfellow Cambridge Ltd. B 4 C granules were supplied by a domestic BWR manufacturer in Japan. The chemical compositions were shown elsewhere 7 .…”

“…However, these conventional methods do not easily provide chemical state information, as they are limited by insufficient energy resolution. Although soft X-ray emission or absorption spectrometry, using synchrotron radiation facilities, may provide an understanding of the chemical state of B 6 7 , it is not economically viable to simultaneously obtain a detailed spatial distribution.…”
