Local slope evolution during thermal annealing of polycrystalline Au films

Abstract: The morphological evolution of thermally annealed polycrystalline gold films was studied in terms of several statistical parameters of the growing surface, determined by x-ray diffraction and scanning probe microscopy, including roughness, in-plane and out-of-plane grain size and local slope distributions. The morphology transformations occur as a result of the balance of attractive and repulsive interactions between surface structures emerging at different length scales, which comprise a competition between s… Show more

“…From this procedure, we obtained the contour maps of the AFM images. The lateral grain size is defined as the maximum distance between the intersections of the grain's contours in the " " and " " directions [31]. Although the thickness is under the surface structures generated by diffusion effects they present larger sizes from the point of view of an area or plant size of these structures.…”

“…The lateral grain size is defined as the larger distance between the intersections of the contour map (grain boundaries) and the average grain size of the image is estimated using a maximum and minimum criterion. A detailed explanation of the algorithm can be found elsewhere [52,53]. Additionally, SEM images (JEOL JSM-6010LA) were obtained from the samples.…”
