Local recurrence of sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma with eosinophilia in the upper lip: a case report

Abstract: IntroductionSclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma with eosinophilia is a rare morphological variant of thyroid carcinoma associated with Hashimoto’s disease. To date, only three such tumors have been reported in the minor salivary glands. We describe the first case, to the best of our knowledge, of recurrent sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma with eosinophilia in the minor salivary glands of the upper lip.Case presentationA 61-year-old Japanese man was referred to our hospital with a mass in his median upper li… Show more

“…12 MEC consists of three cell components (epidermoid, mucin-producing, and intermediate), and MEC with eosinophilia has been reported in the thyroid gland, minor salivary gland, and esophagus. 1315 MEC with chromosomal translocation t(11;19)-associated CRTC1 - MAML2 gene fusion was found in the salivary gland. It was also identified in cervical MEC, but not in cervical adenosquamous carcinoma.…”

“…Sclerosing MEC is a rare salivary gland tumor, with only 33 cases having reported to date (including the present case). 2,[9][10][11][12] The mean age of patients is 47 years, and the female-to-male ratio is 2. Most sclerosing MECs were in the major salivary glands (21 in the parotid gland, 7 in the submandibular gland, and 5 in the minor salivary gland).…”

“…Most had a good prognosis except for 3 cases with recurrent and/or metastatic disease, resulting in death in one case (Table 1). 9,11 Histologically, sclerosing MEC is characterized by a dense fibrosclerotic stroma undergoing hyalinization and occupying 15% to 90% of the tumor area. 2 This is often accompanied by a prominent lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate that may form lymphoid follicles at the periphery.…”

“…Malignant salivary gland tumours characterized by mucoepidermal differentiation with sclerotic stroma rich in lymphocytes and eosinophils have been designated the name sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma with eosinophilia [1][2][3][4] (SMECE). However, it has not been listed as an entity in the chapter on salivary gland, 2022 WHO Classification of Head and Neck Tumours 5 .…”
