Local Recruitment in the Greater Flamingo: A New Approach Using Capture–mark–recapture Data

Abstract: Although the establishment of new individuals in the breeding component of a population is an essential feature of population regulation, only a few attempts have been made to test biological hypotheses about recruitment. Most previous studies rely on ad hoc calculations or are flawed with unwarranted assumptions about survival. We use a recently developed approach, based on capture–mark–recapture, in which analysis of local recruitment is similar to a time‐reversed analysis of survival. The basic data set con… Show more

“…the proportion of birds that have already bred at least once among all breeders of age I; Pradel 1996). An alternative measure, b I , is easy to interpret and reflects the probability that a breeder of age I is a first-time breeder: b I = 1 -c I (Pradel et al 1997). Our capture-recapture data refer only to birds trapped at nests and thus individuals for which breeding was confirmed (assessed with 100 % certainty).…”

“…equality of survival between breeders and pre-breeders) since only data from the period in which each individual is known to be alive are used . Recently, Schwarz & Arnason (2000) indicated that the method of Pradel et al (1997) can be biased; however, we believe that this concern is unfounded (Frederiksen & Pradel 2001).…”

“…In order to use Pradel's reverse approach (Pradel 1996) to study age of recruitment, the data must be handled in a particular way (Pradel et al 1997). Only known breeders are used in the analysis, and the initial capture (marking as un£edged chick) is deleted from the capture history.…”
