Scientific literacy is an essential 21st-century skill that students must master. Scientific literacy is the proficiency to engage with scientific ideas and knowledge that shapes the student’s ability to interpret and evaluate data within scientific inquiry and make decisions regarding natural change, human activities, and technology. In addition to scientific literacy, thinking skills are crucial in the current era. Thinking skills help students solve social, scientific, and practical problems. Therefore, the current research objective is to test the effectiveness of the local-based knowledge module as a learning media to enhance student scientific literacy and thinking skills in Kupang Regency. 78 elementary school students in Kupang, Indonesia, were involved. They were selected based on the random sampling method and divided into experimental and control groups. The data were collected before using the module, during the use of the module, and after using the module. The instrument used to collect the data was tested for validity and reliability with expert validation. The collected data was then analyzed with SPSS 16 package software. Descriptive analysis and MANOVA were performed. The results indicate that the students’ average scores in scientific literacy and thinking skills are enhanced after they use the module. It is emphasized by the significance of the MANOVA analysis, which indicates the difference in score between the group of students who use the local-based knowledge module and those who do not. Based on the results, the module effectively enhances students’ scientific literacy and thinking skills. Therefore, this module can be used by teachers at the learning level to improve their scientific literacy and thinking skills.

This study aims to design and implement Sports and Health Physical Education (PJOK) learning oriented to local wisdom through the use of traditional Urang Banjar games. The local wisdom contained in the traditional game of Urang Banjar includes social, cultural, and environmental wisdom values that have colored Banjar society for centuries. The research method used was classroom action research (PTK) involving high school PJOK class students in the Banjar area. This research focuses on developing a curriculum based on local wisdom by integrating traditional Urang Banjar games as one of its main components. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and assessments of student participation in these traditional games. The results showed that the use of traditional Urang Banjar games in PJOK learning had a positive impact on students' understanding of local wisdom, physical health, and social values. Students show higher levels of participation and greater enthusiasm in this learning. In addition, they also better understand the importance of maintaining the surrounding culture and environment. In conclusion, learning PJOK oriented to local wisdom using traditional Urang Banjar games can be an effective approach to increase students' understanding of physical health, cultural values, and environmental wisdom. This supports the integration of local cultural heritage in the educational curriculum, which can produce a generation that is more insightful and has good physical health, while preserving local traditions.

Given the relation between language and culture, the incorporation of local culture topics in the EFL classroom can serve as a means of fostering greater comfort among students when speaking in public. Therefore, the present study aimed to provide a closer look at EFL learners’ speaking performance by introducing local culture topics to speaking assignments in class. This paper reports the findings of a mixed methods study on the effect of local culture topics on speaking skills and motivation of a group of students at a high school in Cuenca, Ecuador. Quantitative data was collected through a pre-test and post-test based on the Attitude Motivation Test Battery (Gardner, 1985). Qualitative data was gathered through speaking rubrics, class observations, student questionnaires and teacher interviews to gauge students’ level of comfort during speaking activities and their perceptions on the incorporation of local culture as a focal point. While the quantitative results showed no statistical differences between the students’ pre and post motivation scores, classroom observations showed increases in their oral production and appreciation for local culture topics. Further research with a longer period of intervention time is recommended.
