We present the first longitudinal evidence that declining local political news coverage is reducing citizen engagement. Drawing on a content analysis of more than 10,000 stories about US House campaigns in 2010 and 2014, we show that local newspapers over this period published less, and less substantive, political news. We then use panel data from the Cooperative Congressional Election Study to investigate how the news environment influences citizen engagement. Tracking the same individuals over time and simultaneously measuring changes in media content in their communities reveals that reductions in citizens' political knowledge and participation follow declines in coverage about congressional elections. To the extent that the local news environment continues to deteriorate-a likely scenario as the industry continues to struggle-observers' concerns about political engagement in localities across the United States appear very much justified.

Editorial offices are being shut down in small municipalities, raising the question of whether hyperlocal media can fill the gap left by legacy media. However, very little is known about the shape of this gap and thus to what extent it can be filled by hyperlocal media. To inform this line of research, this study asks: what happens to the news coverage of a municipality when there is no permanent presence of journalists? A quantitative content analysis (N = 606), measuring news topics, framing, style, original reporting and sourcing practices, was performed regarding the news coverage of 12 Swedish municipalities – six with editorial offices of a legacy media organisation and six without. The results indicate that municipalities receive less original coverage, community news receives less attention and institutional actors are quoted more often when there is no permanent presence of journalists. Implications for communities and hyperlocal media are discussed.

The article examines aspects of network societies functioning, describes characteristics of stratified scales in local Internet communities. The study of various aspects of stratification in virtual groups is based on a practical social research aimed at social and stratification analysis of local Internet communities existing in the cyber domains of large Russian cities. On the basis of generalization of theorizes and processing of the data received, the authors come to the conclusion that there is a stratified scale in any local community, according to which the users are ranged. The diversity of the entire system of criteria for status and role stratification, the skills of community members in applying these criteria influence the moderation rights used by the formal and informal leaders of the network community, and ultimately influence the controllability of interaction within the virtual group. Stratification within local virtual groups is systemic, since in the absence of it a social order is impossible. However, the stable functioning of the Internet community is not possible without a stratified system as a form of institutionalization of social action.
