Local High-Dose Radiotherapy and Sparing of Normal Tissue Using Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) for Mucosal Melanoma of the Nasal Cavity and Paranasal Sinuses

Abstract: Local dose escalation with IMRT yields good treatment results with respect to local and distant tumor control as well as survival, while treatment-related toxicity can be minimized.

“…The purpose was to explore the potential of tomotherapy as a new method of image-guided intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) to lower the dose to kidneys, liver and bone marrow while covering the peritoneal cavity with a homogeneous dose [8,15,16,23,24]. With a field width of 40 cm and a maximal length of 160 cm, helical tomotherapy is a very promising option for this kind of large and complexly shaped target volumes [1,2,6,10,12,17,19]. We provide the first clinical report on the use of tomotherapy in large-field WAI.…”

“…Development and implementation of advanced radiotherapy delivery techniques such as IMRT [3,6,15,21] made individual patient dose validation essential. The quality assurance of one entire IMRT plan consists of a comparison between measured dose distribution and the dose distribution calculated with the TPS.…”

“…Nach Einführung der stereotaktischen und der intensitäts-modulierten Strahlentherapie (IMRT) zwischen 1990 und 2000 haben die Komplexität der Bestrahlungen und die damit einhergehende Dokumentation dramatisch zugenommen [2,3,6]. Bei gleichzeitig steigenden Patientenzahlen hat sich der Anteil der derart komplex behandelten Patienten erhöht.…”
