PurposeSustainability has been the subject of several scientific investigations. Many researchers in the construction industry have also examined a range of sustainability-related studies. However, few studies have thoroughly reviewed implementing sustainability concepts in high-rise residential buildings (HRRBs).Design/methodology/approachBy adopting scientometrics and systematic review (SR), this study seeks to map out recent sustainability trends and concepts in the design, development and operation of HRRBs worldwide and in Hong Kong. With a focus on bibliographic records from the Web of Science (WoS) database, 1,395 journal articles from 2013 to 2022 were analysed. Furthermore, thirteen studies were systematically reviewed.FindingsThe SR indicated that sustainable practices in developing Hong Kong's HRRBs emphasised zero-carbon buildings, reduced energy usage and energy-efficient retrofitting. Likewise, terms such as BIM, urban density, life cycle assessment and system dynamics are strongly connected with clusters that include “residential buildings”, “high-rise buildings” and “high-rise residential buildings”. The study identified significant themes in establishing HRRBs by combining sustainable practices, emphasising urban governance and policy management, building performance and thermal comfort, energy and design optimisation, occupant behaviour and sensitivity analysis. Core sustainability ideas have improved resource management, air quality management and knowledge of user behaviour in HRRBs.Originality/valueThe study allows researchers and practitioners to explore future research directions in the built environment per the application of sustainable concepts in the development of HRRBs from design, construction and post-construction phases.

Research on the Orderliness Synergy Between Conventional and Nonconventional for Energy Transition in China

Many industrialized countries are pursuing energy transition, but their focuses are different. The orderliness synergy as a unique aspiration of the current energy transition is emphasized in this article by constructing an orderliness-synergy evaluation model and selecting a dataset covering the period of 2011–2018 from Industrial Scale, Economic Benefit, Social Contribution, and Growth Potential of China to calculate the comprehensive development level and the orderliness-synergy degree of both the conventional energy industry and the nonconventional one. A novel evaluation model with stock-increment attributes is built to measure the resource storage and the growth rate systematically and to further analyze their driving forces. The results reveal that 1) the overall orderliness-synergy degree of these two sub-industries shows an upward trend year by year; however, there are some significant differences among them. 2) China’s energy transition has shown a dramatic promotion in the structural upgrading, while the momentums of these two sub-industries show a shift from the stock–resource–contribution advantage to the increment–resource–contribution advantage. 3) The actual stock-increment contribution coefficient values of these two sub-industries have not reached the development expectations of industrial performances, and there is still reasonable space for the structural optimization. Finally, policy implications are discussed.

Purpose This study aims to analyse the essential characteristics for the success of social projects developed with undergraduate students of higher education institutions (HEIs). Design/methodology/approach A case study was conducted to verify the main characteristics of projects in a social entrepreneurship initiative. These features were used to perform a survey with experts to understand which of these items are essential for social projects success, through Lawshe’s method. Findings Of the ten items evaluated, two were considered essential by the experts: “Proper alignment between project scope and actual local community needs” and “Good level of interaction between students participating in the project and the local community”. Practical implications These findings can be useful for professors and coordinators to prepare future projects in HEIs. They may also be advantageous for researchers who may use them as a starting point for future studies. Originality/value The novelty of this study is the methodological approach used: a case study of projects in a social entrepreneurship initiative in a relevant Brazilian university; and a Lawshe’s method analysis of responses of experts in social projects developed in HEIs. The findings can greatly contribute to the debates in this field. No similar research was found in the literature.
