The current applications in the energy sector are based largely on fossil fuels which release greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. To face the issue of global warming, the energy sector has to transfer to and develop sustainable energy solutions that do not release carbon emissions. This is one of the primary motivators for the SDEWES conference as well as for this review, and previous ones, examining the most recent works based on sustainable and green energy production in such fields. The 17th Conference on the Sustainable Development of Energy, Water, and Environment Systems (SDEWES) was held on 6–10 November 2022 in Paphos, Cyprus. The SDEWES conference aims at solving complex and ongoing concerns that approach a long-term perspective and supporting innovative solutions and continuous monitoring and evaluation. This review paper aims at collecting the main presented papers focused on the following hot topics: low-carbon technologies based on renewable and clean-energy systems, including mainly biomass, solar, and wind energy applications; energy storage systems; hydrogen-based systems; energy-saving strategies in buildings; and the adoption of smart management strategies using renewable energy systems. These topics are investigated in order to propose solutions to address the issues of climate change, water scarcity, and energy saving. From the analyzed works, we note that some key issues for sustainable development remain to be further addressed: such as novel and advanced energy storage systems, green hydrogen production, novel low-temperature district heating and cooling networks, novel solar technologies for the simultaneous production of power and high temperature heat, solar desalination for hydrogen production systems, and agrivoltaic systems for the production of power and food.

The decreasing costs of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology have led to an exponential growth in the use of PV self-consumption systems. This development has encouraged the consideration of battery energy storage systems (BESS) as a potential means of achieving even more independence from the fluctuating grid electricity prices. As PV technology and energy storage costs continue to decline, both technologies will likely play an increasingly important role in the renewable energy sector. The profitability of batteries in PV self-consumption systems is largely influenced by the price of consumed electricity and the price at which surplus energy is remunerated. However, strategies in PV-BESS self-consumption systems typically do not take electricity prices into consideration as a variable for decision making. This study simulates and analyzes battery operation strategies that take into account electricity prices. The simulations are performed using real industrial consumption data and real electricity prices and tariffs, they cover the entire lifespan of the batteries, and include aging and degradation due to use and cycling. A techno-economic model is used to evaluate the advantages of incorporating these battery operational strategies into an actual PV-BESS system. The results demonstrate that the proposed strategies enhance the savings that batteries can provide.

Optimal Scheduling of Controllable Resources in Energy Communities: An Overview of the Optimization Approaches

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the study of energy communities. This new definition refers to a community sharing energy resources of different types to meet its needs and reduce the associated costs. Optimization is one of the most widely used techniques for scheduling the operation of an energy community. In this study, we extensively reviewed the mathematical models used depending on the objectives and constraints considered. The models were also classified according to whether they address uncertainty and the inclusion of flexibility constraints. The main contribution of this study is the analysis of the most recent research on the mathematical formulation of optimization models for optimal scheduling of resources in energy communities. The results show that the most commonly used objectives are profit maximization and cost minimization. Additionally, in almost all cases, photovoltaic generation is one of the main energy sources. Electricity prices, renewable generation, and energy demand are sources of uncertainty that have been modeled using stochastic and robust optimization. Flexibility services using demand response are often modeled using interruptible loads and shiftable loads. There is still considerable room for further research on the distribution of benefits among the participants of the energy community and the provision of flexibility services to the electricity grid.
