“…15 Because of the exceptionally large incoherent scattering cross section of hydrogen atoms, it has mostly been employed to investigate the single-particle dynamics. 16 However, using deuterated materials it is possible to study the collective dynamics of materials, i. which has been recently indicated to be of fundamental significance, 17,18 providing insights on the lifetime of structural organization, as for example, noticeably, hydrogen bond networks. 19 Such insights are generally, albeit with notable exceptions, 17 not available from other scattering techniques which lack the opportune spatial (e.g., light scattering) or temporal (e.g., X-ray scattering) resolution.…”

“…To go beyond this limit, we have to resort either to neutron scattering which offers better energy resolution or to develop the method of X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) with free-electron X-ray laser [26]. At the 12)) [25].…”

“…G ( R , t ) is directly related to an intermediate scattering function, F ( Q , t ), and the dynamic structure functions, S ( Q , E ), via the Fourier transformation; thus, the quasi-elastic and inelastic scattering of X-ray and neutron can be used to obtain the VHF experimentally if the Fourier transform can be reliably carried out. Thanks to the recent progress in high-resolution inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS), , the VHF can be determined experimentally, being utilized to identify correlated motions in liquids. This technique has shown the relationship between the decay behavior of the first neighboring peak and macroscopic viscosity in pure water. , Furthermore, it has shown the slowing-down of the local correlated dynamics of water in the hydration shells around Cl – ions in the aqueous solution of sodium chloride . Still, there remained uncertainty about the detailed water–ion correlated motions owing to the intrinsic broad width of the correlation profiles.…”
