Local clay-varve chronology in the Karlskrona-Hultsfred region, southeast Sweden

Correlation of stadial and interstadial events in the south Swedish glacial varves with the GRIP oxygen isotope record

“…The varve chronology between the Karlskrona and the Högsby-Hultsfred area ( Fig. 1) was recently presented and certifies the overlapping of the varve graphs (at varve year 280) in the southern and northern parts of the study area (Ringberg et al 2002), which is shown in Figs 2 and 3. Site 7 (Karlshamn) and site 12 (St. Sinnern) overlap by 50 varve years.…”

Such an interesting sequence has not been observed before and suggests the possibility of relating the abrupt change of sediment influx in the delta to the change from thin to thick varves at 550 in the varve sequences.…”

“…Event 6 is an interval of very thin varves (400 to 550). It is most likely that thicker varve intervals do not reflect proximal conditions, as the ice recession in the study area, according to the local varve chronology (Ringberg et al 2002), shows no indications of readvances which could cause repeated proximal conditions. Furthermore, proximal varves have been excluded from the varve graphs with the exception of varves À280 to À200 (see above).…”

From these correlated sequences, 17 graphs have been selected and used along with one unpublished varve sequence from the Baltic, 110 km SSE of Gotland (Figs 2, 3; Table 1).…”
