Local Anesthetics Infiltration and Wound Healing Process

Abstract: It is a good practice, nowadays, to infiltrate local anesthetics along the incision to prevent postoperative pain. This can reduce the use of opioids and the side effects they cause. It is known clearly that the surgical trauma causes inflammatory reaction, and this can be the beginning of a bad cicatrization or even a scar. The use of local anesthetics preventing the acute pain is a very simple technique and has proved to be useful. Nevertheless, the reaction that various anesthetics have over the tissues and… Show more

“…Epinephrine could be used to lengthen the duration of action and decrease drug toxicity. Local anesthesia might also have an important role in eicosanoid, fibroblast formation, and scar tissue formation in wound healing (Abrão et al, 2020).…”

“…Analgetic drugs such as Non Steroid Anti Inflamatory Drug (NSAID) that are administered on wound healing phases showed non satisfactory result in reducing pain after wound formation, therefore multimodal analgesics are needed to accelerate wound healing. One of the methods that accelerates wound healing process is by infiltration of local anaesthesia (LA) around incision wound, that aims to reduce sensitization and hyperalgesia therefore accelerates wound healing, and subcutaneous administration shows bacteriostatic and bactericidal properties (Abrão et al, 2020;Brower et al, 2003). LA infiltration reduces the release of inflammation mediators of neutrophils, decrease oxidant formation, edema formation, and reduce adhesion of neutrophils on cell endothels (Hollmann et al, 2000).…”

“…Consequently, sensitization of nociceptive receptors, and the ensuing hyperalgesia may be prevented. 5 The LA may be administered by pre-or post-incisional abdominal nerve block or pre-or post-incisional abdominal wound infiltration. [6][7][8] It may also be administered by continuous wound irrigation at the end of the procedure.…”
