Local and Regional Anaesthetic Techniques in Canine Ovariectomy: A Review of the Literature and Technique Description

Abstract: Canine ovariectomy is an elective surgery with a moderate level of pain. Despite its relative simplicity, it requires surgical pain management. This study aimed to collect all recent information about local and regional anaesthetic/analgesic techniques in a review of the literature describing the technique utilised. The various procedures described in this review use local anaesthetics to improve analgesia in the routine systemic anaesthetic protocol. The approach described in this paper is called multimodal a… Show more

“…Our results completely agree with an earlier study on dogs undergoing conventional ovariohysterectomy that TAP block performed in the cranial and caudal abdomen with bupivacaine causes a significant reduction in isoflurane requirements [ 23 ]. The present study goes a step further, showing the reduction of the EtISO in the TAP group compared to the control group precisely during ovarian manipulation and resection, which has been proven to be the most painful stage of surgery in both open ovariectomies and LapOVs [ 6 ].…”

“…Despite the minimally invasive nature of these techniques, patients may experience discomfort associated with the surgery in addition to abdominal distension and CO 2 insufflation [ 4 ]. To provide intra- and postoperative analgesia for surgical procedures of the abdomen, the use of the transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block has been increasing for human and veterinary patients [ 5 , 6 ].…”

“…The opioid-free anesthesia technique was introduced to prevent tolerance and hyperalgesia and reduce the use of these drugs in the postoperative period. This method uses agents such as alpha-2-agonists, ketamine, and local analgesics with distinct action mechanisms in multimodal analgesia [ 102 , 103 , 104 ]. Other new opioid-based pharmacological options are transdermal patches impregnated with morphine-like compounds.…”
