The data presented in this article constitute a supplementary material and provide support to the study “Loading protocols for qualification testing of BRBs considering global performance requirements” by Aguaguiña et al. [1]. Three types of datasets are given herein mainly in the form of tables. The first two correspond to databases built based on a compilation of past experimental testing on buckling-restrained braces (BRBs), conducted in different parts of the world. Two distinct objectives motivated such data compilation: (1) to determine a practical range for the parameter named as Yield Length Ratio (YLR), from full-scale and large-scale buckling-restrained braced frame (BRBF) specimens, that allowed for evaluation of the maximum deformation demands of BRBs [1]; and (2) to extract information on the properties of BRB specimens of different types, materials, and origin, for calibration of a numerical model that enabled the simulations of quasi-static cyclic tests of BRBs under five different code-prescribed loading histories (US, EU, CN, JP, and CA) and two proposed global loading protocols (GLP-1 and GLP-2) [1]. The last dataset type corresponds to the results of these numerical simulations, which were conducted using the OpenSees platform. The results show the maximum ductility demand (μmax), cumulative inelastic deformation, in terms of cumulative plastic ductility (CPD) and cumulative plastic strain (CPS), and cumulative hysteretic energy (Ēh) of BRBs as a result of the application of each loading sequence, and they are tabulated by BRB specimen.

SummaryQuasi‐static testing is one of the most commonly used experimental methods for examining the seismic performance of structural members. However, consistent loading protocols for experimental seismic qualification of members in emerging steel frames such as self‐centering braced frames (SCBFs) as well as in some conventional ones including buckling‐restrained braced frames (BRBFs) are still lacking. This paper aims to propose standardized loading protocols based on time‐history dynamic analysis on a series of prototype building frames, including steel SCBFs, BRBFs, and moment‐resisting frames (MRFs), where both far‐field and near‐fault earthquakes are considered. The methodology for the development of the loading protocols involves ground motion selection and scaling, design and analysis of prototype buildings, analysis results processing, and rainflow cycle counting, together with extra justification steps. The proposed loading protocols are consistently derived based on the MCE‐level seismic hazard and 84th percentile values of key seismic demand parameters. These parameters are number of damaging cycles Nt, maximum inter‐story drift θmax, inter‐story drift range Δθi, sum of inter‐story drift range ΣΔθi, and residual inter‐story drift θr. The analysis confirms the variations in these seismic demands imposed on the different structural systems under different types of ground motions, highlighting the necessity of developing separate loading protocols for the different cases. The assumptions, decisions, and judgments made during the development of the loading protocols are elaborated, and the conditions and restrictions are outlined. The rationality of the proposed loading protocols is further justified through demonstrating the cumulative distribution function and energy dissipation demand of the systems.

Experimental investigation of a low‐prestressed self‐centering energy dissipative brace

Self‐centering energy dissipative (SCED) braces have the potential to contribute greatly to building resiliency, because the braces can limit both maximum and residual story drifts during earthquakes. An obstacle to widespread adoption of existing SCED systems is that they require high prestressing forces, corresponding to more than half of the brace yield strength. To address this problem, a new low‐prestressed SCED (LP‐SCED) system has been proposed, which has a flag‐shaped force–deformation hysteresis but needs only a low level of prestressing force. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation to establish the properties of the new system's key components, as well as prototypes of the full brace specimen. The tested system had a prestressing force equal to only 3∼4% of the brace yield force. The tested systems had a stable, flag‐shaped force–deformation hysteresis relationship, even after being subjected to deformations corresponding to 3.4% story drift. Eventually, when the imposed deformations were sufficiently large, the brace stiffness increased dramatically, which helps to reduce drift concentrations that may be critical in braced‐frame structures under extreme earthquakes. The yielding and damage were restricted to the mild‐steel dissipaters, which could be replaced easily after each test, and in practice, they could be replaced easily after an earthquake.
