Load Characteristics of a Suspended Carbon Nanotube Film Heater and the Fabrication of a Fast-Response Thermochromic Display Prototype

Abstract: The influence of heating load on the thermal response of a CNT film heater has been studied. Two kinds of heat dissipation modes, thermal radiation in a vacuum and convection in the atmosphere, are investigated, respectively. It is found that the thermal response slows down with the load quantities in the both cases. We have further studied the thermal response of a CNT film loaded with thermochromic pigment, which is a kind of phase change material. In addition to the thermal response slowing down with the lo… Show more

“…With the advent of new technologies such as ubiquitous computing and the Internet of Things, wearable devices have been attracting significant attention owing to the increasing demand for convenient accessibility. As part of wearable devices, film heaters, which are electrically heated by resistive Joule heating, have been used in applications such as thermotherapy pads, thermochromic displays, sensors, and microchannel chips . In particular, thermotherapy pads are one of the most commercial treatment tools used in orthopedics for physiotherapy, such as the rehabilitation of rheumatic arthritis, decreasing chronic inflammation, reducing joint stiffness, improving blood circulation, and relieving pain caused by obesity .…”

“…As the CNT bers are made entirely of CNTs, potentially they can be as strong, and electrically and thermally conductive as individual CNTs. Even though the properties of CNT bers are still much inferior to those of CNTs, a number of applications such as display, 7 articial muscle, 8 supercapacitor, 9 batteries, 10 invisible material, 11 and strain sensor 12 have been demonstrated based on the current state of the electrical and thermal properties of CNT bers, which are now comparable with conventional metals. 13 However, very few applications have been demonstrated based on the mechanical strength of CNT ber as a structural material.…”

“…Alternatively, chromic‐dye‐based color switching, such as electrochromic and thermochromic, offers the ability to exhibit reflective‐type visual information. This approach, which has analogies to electrophoretic displays, utilizes various chromic dyes of different colors toward a potential color‐reflective visual interface device.…”
