Abstract: El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo explorar las múltiples significaciones que revistió el concepto «usos y costumbres» indígenas en el contexto de reorganización cultural y política que el centro de México y Yucatán sufrieron en el siglo XVI. Para ello, se analiza un amplio abanico de fuentes, como diccionarios coloniales, manuales pastorales y de adoctrinamiento misionero, juicios y ordenanzas para el gobierno de tales pueblos de indios.
