lncRNA ST8SIA6‑AS1 facilitates proliferation and invasion in liver cancer by regulating miR‑142‑3p

Abstract: Long non-coding RNA ST8 α-N-acetyl-neuraminide α-2,8-sialyltransferase 6 antisense 1 (ST8SIA6-AS1) has been identified as a novel oncogene in breast cancer. However, its involvement in liver cancer has remained elusive. In the present study, the expression of ST8SIA6-AS1 and microRNA (miR)-142-3p in liver cancer tissues and cell lines was detected by reverse transcription-quantitative PCR. Tumor cell proliferation, migration and invasion assays were performed to determine the biological functions of ST8SIA6-AS… Show more

“…Phytosterols are of plant origin and have reported cholesterol-lowering effects [ 164 , 165 ]. In humans, high expression of the ST8SIA6 gene has been attributed an oncogenic function, including tumor cell proliferation, invasion, and migration [ 166 ]. As little is known of this gene in chickens, an overt attribution of a high expression of this gene to an increased likelihood of hepatic steatosis or liver cancer might be farfetched.…”

“…Previously, we reported aberrant miRNA expression in mesothelioma cell lines, and miR-142-3p was one of the downregulated miRNAs in the study [9]. In various human cancers, such as breast, cervical, liver, and colorectal cancer, miR-142-3p functions as a tumor suppressor [10][11][12][13]. However, to our knowledge, no studies have been published on miR-142-3p in malignant mesothelioma.…”

“…Its silencing causes mitotic catastrophe and massive apoptosis in human cancer cells [141]. ST8SIA6-AS1 increases malignancy by regulating miR-142-3p [142], miR-338-3p [143] and miR-651-5p [144] in hepatocellular carcinoma cells, while in triple-negative breast cancer it drives cell proliferation and metastasis by targeting miR-145-5p, resulting in p53 pathway inactivation [145].…”
