“…The efficacy of Olyset TM Plus decreased with net age and this correlates with the depletion of permethrin and PBO content after 36 months of community use (8.3g/kg vs 20g/kg when new and ∼0.7g/kg vs 10g/kg respectively). Similar findings were reported in Uganda (32) with low retention (3.7g/kg) of PBO content, 25 months post distribution for Olyset TM Plus LLIN and Kenya (33) 87% of PBO and 52% of permethrin were lost after 36 months of community use, while PBO retention was higher when nets were washed 20 times in the laboratory (2.0g/kg) in Benin (34).…”

“…As part of the LLINEUP trial, we withdrew LLINs from the community at 12 months and 25 months after LLIN distribution, assayed the chemical content of the nets (pyrethroid insecticide and PBO), and conducted bioassays on the same nets with pyrethroid-resistant mosquitoes. 17,20 We observed that that the concentration of PBO on the net was strongly predictive of mosquito mortality. These results have been published separately.…”

“…These results have been published separately. 20 Limitations to the design of this pragmatic trial embedded with a LLIN distribution campaign led by the Ugandan Ministry of Health have been discussed. 12 Additional limitations were present in the current study.…”

“…Fourth, the concentration of PBO used was 4.0% which may not be directly comparable to the concentration of PBO on LLINs. In a study of PBO LLINs distributed by the Ugandan Ministry of Health in 2017–2018, the concentration of PBO at baseline was 26.81 g/kg in PermaNet 3.0, and 8.17 g/kg in Olyset Plus ( Mechan et al., 2022 ) which may not be equivalent to the concentration included in the WHO tube assay. Finally, the absence of historical data before LLIN and/or IRS implementation limited the inferences that could be made on the development and spread of pyrethroid resistance mutations.…”
