Lizard Island Polychaete Workshop: sampling sites and a checklist of polychaetes

Abstract: In August 2013, a two week polychaete workshop was held at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef. Twenty-one sites representing 121 collection events were sampled for polychetes around Lizard and on the Outer Barrier. Workshop participants sorted polychaetes to family and each participant received on loan selected families to work up. This Zootaxa monograph describes 91 new species, 67 new records for Lizard Island, and 19 for Australia. Details regarding the habitats and locations are provided in Table 2 together… Show more

“…During the workshop (12-23 August, 2013), collections were made daily by snorkelling and SCUBA diving, from the intertidal zone to ~30 m deep, covering most types of habitats found in the Lizard Island and surrounding areas, including coral reefs, mangroves and sandy beaches, with sandy and coral rubble bottoms (see Ribas & Hutchings, 2015, Zootaxa 4019, for location of sampling sites and their co-ordinates). Coral rubble and coral pieces were broken up by using a hammer, polychaetes were sorted alive under a stereomicroscope, relaxed in magnesium chloride solution and selected specimens of some species were photographed alive by Alexander Semenov; those photos are included in .…”

“…The list of the examined material provided for each species includes the museum registration number, the ID of sampling localities and locality descriptions. Locality descriptions of material collected during the August 2013 collection trip (MI QLD 2329 -MI QLD 2449) are listed in Ribas & Hutchings (2015).
