LivingFog: Leveraging fog computing and LoRaWAN technologies for smart marina management (experience paper)

Abstract: In recent years, fog computing has emerged as a paradigm that brings computing, storage and networking resources closer to end users and devices at the edge of the network. One of the use cases for fog computing is IoT, where a large amount of data is generated by sensors that need to be pre-processed in place before the results are sent to the cloud for further processing and long-term storage. However, actual fog deployments are at their infancy. In this paper, we present the smart-marina project at La Marin… Show more

“…By querying the monitoring metrics from the global-view cluster, the administrators can easily monitor the status of other clusters instead of accessing each cluster individually. Prometheus Federation has been successfully used for monitoring systems deployed across geographically distributed environments [4], [33]- [36].…”

“…Apart from these more experimental and personalized proposals, there are already commercial water sensors and water-monitoring systems (for instance Telog-41 of TrimbleWater [37] and DO-IoT-Compact of Umweltleistungen [38]) on the market that use low-power LoRa technology so that the sensor batteries last for several years with fairly reasonable data transmission intervals. Finally, there is a very interesting project at La Marina de Valencia (Spain) proposed by Battulga et al [39]. In their project they use a network of sensors deployed throughout the sea to measure parameters such as the weather and the movement of marine vehicles.…”

“…We focus on the specific use case of localization in a marina environment [3]. Marinas are looking for such a system for tracking: boats (to know if they are in the right place and to warn marina operators in case of an unexpected movement which could indicate theft), equipment (to know the location of an important asset or tool in order to improve efficiency) and workers (to ensure that they are safe and working on the right tasks).…”
