Living positively with dementia: a systematic review and synthesis of the qualitative literature

Abstract: This review provides a first step towards understanding what conceptual domains might be important in defining positive outcomes for people who live with dementia. Highlighting the potential for people to have positive experiences in spite of or even because of their dementia has important implications for de-stigmatizing dementia and will enhance person-centred approaches to care.

“…Generally, the experience of the quality of life is associated with the experience of social support and social interactions (Beerens et al, ; Wolverson, Clarke, & Moniz‐Cook, ). To prevent isolation and to maintain a meaningful life in the stages of mild and moderate dementia, many people with dementia emphasise the importance of having social relations with others in the same situation as achieved at day care (Eriksen et al, ).…”

“…More recently, a meta-synthesis of living positively with dementia was undertaken, which highlighted retained capacities to utilise character strengths and actively seek enjoyment and pleasure and provides a strong rationale for the development of PP outcome measures within dementia research [10]. …”
