The development of urban and rural landscapes has entered a pioneering era with novel combinations of energy production and consumption and related changes in the urban and rural fabric including associated socioeconomic issues. Accompanying this change is a realization that newly developing energy initiatives are more viable for development and upscaling and are less vulnerable to failure and resistance from society if they are well integrated into their local and regional contexts. However, institutional questions remain regarding the required mechanisms and levels of integration, while simultaneously sustainable energy planning requires that the stakeholders with diverse and conflicting objectives come to some degree of consensus. Inspired by these findings, a methodological approach for holistic energy planning on a regional/local level was developed within the framework of the INTENSSS-PA project that is funded by HORIZON 2020. The approach provides a holistic energy plan, which goes beyond a blueprint for allocating renewable technologies and is based on the involvement of the wider community. Hence, this approach includes aspects such as the development of spatial concepts, new co-creating strategies, business cases, societal alliances and institutional changes and formats. To implement this approach, the Living Lab (LL) concept is applied. The case of Karditsa, in Greece, will be presented as evidence of the effectiveness of the proposed planning approach.

Abstract.A growing range of public, private and civic organisations, from Unicef through Nesta to NHS, now run units known as "innovation labs". The hopeful assumption they share is that labs, by building on openness among other features, can generate promising solutions to grand challenges of systemic nature. Despite their seeming proliferation and popularisation, the underlying innovation principles embodied by labs have, however, received scant academic attention. This is a missed opportunity, because innovation labs appear to leverage openness for radical innovation in an unusual fashion. Indeed, in this exploratory paper we draw on original interview data and online self-descriptions to illustrate that, beyond convening "uncommon partners" across organisational boundaries, labs apply the principle of openness throughout the innovation process, including the experimentation and development phases. While the emergence of labs clearly forms part of a broader trend towards openness, we show how it transcends established conceptualisations of open innovation (Chesbrough et al., 2006), open science (David, 1998) or open government (Janssen et al., 2012).

Online user communities and social networks are both used for user involvement in innovation process. Even though both of them have active participants as key driving force for innovation, they are still not the same. Therefore, this study investigated citizens' motivations to participate in an online user community, and compared how these motivations differ from motivations to participate in social networks. We conducted a UX study with 51 participants in total. The findings revealed that the role of moderator is a crucial for active participation and keeping up users' motivation. In addition, our findings suggest that an online living lab community shares common characters with other social networks, but it cannot be replaced by social media. The differences between online living lab and social network community are related to user motivations, and the needs of the customers and researchers for living lab activities. In this paper, we present a process of Oulu Urban Living Lab with user involvement supported by the PATIO online user community. Also requirements, system architecture and a new version of PATIO are described. Even though an amount of participants in our living lab study is relatively small, we want to share these insights for professionals of industry and academy.
