“…A number of prospective studies in the literature document the significant association between social relationships and all-cause and disease-specific morbidity and mortality. 8,9 In particular, epidemiologic data suggest that people who have larger and more integrated social networks are at reduced risk for depression 31 , ischemic heart disease 10 and stroke 11 and have better prognoses following myocardial infarction 13 as compared to their more socially isolated counterparts. In patients with end stage renal disease on dialysis, perceiving a discrepancy between expected and received social support was associated with increased mortality.…”

The availability of social support when faced with stressful life conditions is also associated with depression and psychological distress (Israel et al 2002; Lepore 1997; McEwen and Seeman 1999).…”

“…Although less powerful in influence than subjective loneliness, simply being alone does have significant effects on one’s health (e.g., living alone has been tied to cardiovascular problems; Case, Moss, Case, McDermott, & Eberly, 1992). A recent study on both objective isolation and subjective loneliness shows that social isolation predicts mortality separately from loneliness (Steptoe, Shankar, Demakakos, & Wardle, 2013).…”
