Living a Calling and Work–Family Interface: A Latent Profile Analysis

Abstract: The positive outcomes of calling have been examined in a large and growing number of studies, yet little is known about how calling relates to the work-family interface. In this study, we adopted a person-centered approach using latent profile analysis to explore how living a calling relates to different work-family interface profiles. With a sample of 267 Chinese university counselors, we found three work-family interface profiles: slightly conflictual (51%), experiencing slightly higher than average levels o… Show more

“…Based on latent profile analysis results, three types of WFC have been identified: "low-conflict type" (31.11%), "work-dominant-conflict type" (32.20%), and "high-conflict type" (36.69%). These results are consistent with previous research by Vaziri et al (37), Zhang et al (41), Rantanen et al (42), and other research teams that investigated employees from various industries using the Work-Family Conflict and Enrichment Questionnaires, demonstrating the heterogeneity of the Work-Family Interface types. While the Work-Family Interface exhibits overall heterogeneity, its classification with respect to WFC is consistent, and WFC can be categorized into three types: high in WIF and FIW, higher in WIF than in FIW, and low in WIF and FIW.…”

“…We used a six‐item short version of the Work‒Family Enrichment Scale (Kacmar et al., 2014), which consists of two dimensions: work‐to‐family enrichment and family‐to‐work. It has good reliability and validity in the Chinese population (Zhang et al., 2022). Participants responded on a 5‐point scale, ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree) with higher scores indicating a more mutually supportive interface between family and work.…”

“…Future research may consider adopting a person‐centred approach to inductively derive profiles of perception and lived callings constructed across these facets (e.g. Zhang et al, 2022).…”
