Livin expression is an independent factor in rectal cancer patients with or without preoperative radiotherapy

Abstract: BackgroundThis study was aimed to investigate the expression significance of Livin in relation to radiotherapy (RT), clinicopathological and biological factors of rectal cancer patients.MethodsThis study included 144 primary rectal cancer patients who participated in a Swedish clinical trial of preoperative radiotherapy. Tissue microarray samples from the excised primary rectal cancers, normal mucosa and lymph node metastases were immunostained with Livin antibody. The proliferation of colon cancer cell lines … Show more

“…As showed for other cancer types [19, 27, 40, 41, 45], we observed livin localized in both cytoplasm and nuclei. However, none of the previous observations described a significant difference in livin distribution between adenomas and carcinomas.…”

“…By contrast, the ability of anti-livin antibody to detect colon cancer was apparently low throughout all stages, which was consistent with the relatively lower expression of the livin protein in colon cancer (22).…”

“…In patients with rectal cancer, Livin expression was associated with unfavorable OS independent of TNM stage, local and distant recurrence, grade of differentiation, gender, and age. 22 In squamous cell/adenosquamous carcinomas and adenocarcinoma of gallbladder, BIRC7 expression was an independent poor prognostic factor in terms of postoperative survival. 7 Although the oncogenic effects of BIRC7 have been reported in prostate cancer, its prognostic value has not been explored.…”
