Livestock Type is More Crucial Than Grazing Intensity: Traditional Cattle and Sheep Grazing in Short‐Grass Steppes

Abstract: In biodiversity conservation of agriculture‐driven landscapes, grasslands have an outstanding importance; their conservation became a top priority both in research and practice. In many regions, sheep or cattle grazing are the best options for biodiversity conservation. In our study, we compared the effects of cattle and sheep grazing on short‐grass steppe vegetation under various grazing intensities. We tested the following study hypotheses: (i) sheep grazing maintains a lower taxonomic and functional diversi… Show more

“…By hand mowing, it was also possible to give an advantage to introduced species by avoiding cutting them before seed ripening. Grazing is usually associated with a higher trampling disturbance than hand mowing (Tälle et al 2016, Tóth et al 2016 resulting in the failure of germination of the sown species on the grazed Görbeszék kurgan. Based on these findings, for the effective introduction of target species by seed sowing, either hand mowing or soil preparation by raking or smooth harrowing is necessary (Klaus et al 2017).…”

“…Livestock trampling increases as grazing duration and intensity increase, which can compact soil and increase soil bulk density, as what occurred in the current study. Increased soil bulk density is an important indicator of land degradation in grasslands, and it can alter other soil traits, including rainfall infiltration and water retention and thereby affect plant establishment and growth (Li, Zhou, et al, ; Orgill et al, ; Tóth et al, ). Exclusion of grazing can overcome effects of livestock trampling and restore vegetation, in particular restore plant roots, thus decreasing soil bulk density (Table ; Li, Zhou, et al, ).…”

“…Even when done only by domestic animals, grazing is still important for the maintenance of grasslands [19,20], and thus important for most arthropod species, with focus also being given to grazing intensity [32,34,61], with occasional exceptions [62]. The concern is that some of the specialist insect species have been lost from these systems due to the lack of habitats created by wild grazers.…”
