Livestock trade network: potential for disease transmission and implications for risk-based surveillance on the island of Mayotte

Abstract: The island of Mayotte is a department of France, an outermost region of the European Union located in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and the coast of Eastern Africa. Due to its close connection to the African mainland and neighbouring islands, the island is under constant threat of introduction of infectious diseases of both human and animal origin. Here, using social network analysis and mathematical modelling, we assessed potential implications of livestock movements between communes in Mayotte for risk… Show more

“…Together, these observations suggest that the high level of stability of Jingmen arboviruses is more likely due to dispersals of the same virus over long distance. The role of migratory birds (18), rodents (19), or domestic animals (20) that could be infested by ticks or viremic or both has to be investigated to better understand the dissemination of Jingmenviruses over continents. Similarly, the role of bats in the environmental cycle of Jingmenviruses has to be evaluated.…”

“…The Maldives is a large archipelago of 1190 islands, spread out over an area of 298 square kilometers with an estimated population around 530,000 inhabitants, making long-term [19]. Their size and the lack of resources induce more trade, facilitating the importation of vectors and introduction and establishment of viruses [20]. Frequent human migration between the Maldives and chikungunya-endemic countries, including travel to Sri Lanka and India, increase the risk of CHIKV re-introduction and spread [21].…”

“…We acknowledge that the horizontal transmission of HPAI through poultry trade networks between poultry farms was likely a significant factor in its spread, and these events were not fully captured in our study 52 . While the multiple-site production system of the modern livestock industry has significantly improved the efficiency of production, livestock movement between farms is considered an important route of disease transmission 63 69 . Even though the farm type (X 2 ), and the flock size of the poultry farm (X 3 ) could partially capture the frequency and intensity of poultry shipments, those factors were likely not enough to allow the quantification of the full impact of poultry trade on HPAI outbreaks.…”
