Livestock Management for the Delivery of Ecosystem Services in Fire-Prone Shrublands of Atlantic Iberia

Abstract: In the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, characterized by its humid climate, large rural areas are being abandoned, mostly in less-favoured areas covered by heathlands, which present a low nutritive quality for livestock production. The high combustibility of these shrublands is driving a high wildfire incidence with negative environmental and economic effects. In this review, some aspects on wildfire occurrence and the potential of grazing livestock to reduce woody phytomass and fire risk in heathland-domin… Show more

“…Areas with low cropping potential (e.g., arid or mountainous areas), such as the farms studied, depend on grazing [ 14 , 17 ]. While vegetation plays a critical role in mitigating climate change, it also plays an important role in supporting global biodiversity and providing many goods and services to humans [ 9 , 48 ]. Grazing livestock contributes not only to the production of high-quality livestock products linked to the territory (provisioning services) but also to the prevention of forest fires, the improvement of biodiversity, the improvement of pastures through organic fertilization, the dispersal of seeds, the maintenance of rural populations, etc.…”

“…This situation results not only in the reduction in biodiversity but also in a dramatic increase in the risk of wildfire 55 57 . For these reasons the livestock is being increasingly used for creating and maintaining firebreaks in many Mediterranean countries 58 , 59 . The abandonment of traditional activities usually results also in the disappearance of traditional infrastructures which might be important as observed in the first site with the dry-stone walls (Fig.…”

“…The landscape in the study area is dominated by shrublands (32%). This area is used for extensive agropastoral activities and is therefore associated with pasture production (Celaya et al, 2022). However, since the agro-livestock uses in mountainous areas almost disappeared in the region in recent decades (Corbelle-Rico et al 2022), we assumed that only 10% of the shrubland area is oriented toward animal feeding.…”
