Liver Stiffness Is Increased in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Related With Complement C1q/Tumor Necrosis Factor–Related Protein 3 Levels

Abstract: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is very common in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In patients with PCOS, the clinical use of liver stiffness (LS) and whether LS increases or decreases are still unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the parameters related to LS and whether there is an increase in LS in patients with PCOS compared with healthy controls. Thirty-eight women diagnosed with PCOS according to Rotterdam criteria and 28 healthy ageand sex-matched controls were included in… Show more

“…15,23 Shear wave elastography and pSWE techniques have been developed relatively recently and are used in many liver diseases other than thalassemia major. [10][11][12][13][14] A previous study reported that LS measurement with SWE could be performed successfully in children. 24 We could not find a study in the literature comparing the diagnostic performance of TE and pSWE examinations in both adults and children.…”

“…[4][5][6][7][8][9] Shear wave elastography (SWE) and point shear wave elastography (pSWE) are noninvasive and cost-effective US examinations used to evaluate tissue elasticity and LS. [10][11][12][13][14] Shear wave elastography examinations provide more accurate LS measurement than TE examinations. 15 Only 1 study has shown that the LS value obtained by SWE can be used to detect liver fibrosis in adult thalassemia major patients.…”

“…Liver stiffness is usually used in gastroenterology and hepatology clinics and is closely related to liver fibrosis. 12,13 Recently, some studies started to report increased LS levels in CHDs. 14 The first study to evaluate LS in ASD patients showed that there was a significant increase in LS, and this increase was substantially higher in the patients with ASD who also has Eisenmenger syndrome.…”

“…Occasionally, liver US may be performed to evaluate abdominal symptoms, Eisenmenger syndrome, or RV failure in patients with ASD-associated liver diseases. Liver stiffness is usually used in gastroenterology and hepatology clinics and is closely related to liver fibrosis 12,13 . Recently, some studies started to report increased LS levels in CHDs 14 …”
