Abstract: Mild hemolysis of senescent erythrocytes occurs physiologically in the spleen, resulting in hemoglobin (Hb) release, whereas pathologic erythrocyte rupture characterizes several diseases. Iron recycling from Hb and Hb detoxification have been attributed to the sequestration of Hb-haptoglobin complexes by macrophages.
