Liver metastases found by follow-up of patients operated on for colorectal cancer

Abstract: One hundred and twentysix patients earlier operated on for colorectal cancer were followed-up once yearly with serum screening tests. T h e activities of alkaline phosphatase (AP) and gammaglutamyltranspeptidase (GT) were recorded. 58 patients had positive tests. T h e majority of the patients with liver metastases (20/21) was possible to encircle with these simple serum tests. 38 of the 58 "screening positive patients" were further investigated with celiac angiography and/or liver scintigraphy a n d liver met… Show more

“…1,2 As the prognostic assessment of colorectal cancer relies mainly on TNM staging and histologic features, it is important to identify those patients who have a high risk of liver metastasis. Liver metastases are found even in patients with early colorectal cancer (invasion limited to no deeper than the submucosa).…”

“…Synchronous and metachronous liver metastases are found in 20% - 25% and 35% - 55% of patients with advanced colorectal cancer, respectively (1, 2). Liver resection provides a 30% - 40% increase in the 5-year survival rate when metastasis is found only in the liver (3).…”
