Liver Glycogen Synthesis and Glucose Tolerance in Rats Adapted to Diets with a High Proportion of Fructose or Glucose

Abstract: Glucose tolerance and in vivo incorporation of glucose into liver glycogen were investigated in rats fed high carbohydrate diets containing glucose or fructose as the sole carbohydrate source. As compared with control glucose-adapted rats, a slight deterioration of the glucose tolerance was observed in fructose-adapted rats. The possible cause of the deteriorated glucose tolerance in fructose-adapted rats seems to be among others reduced glucose incorporation into liver glycogen and a smaller depression of end… Show more

“…However, after 30 weeks of the HFS diet, 20:4(n-6) levels increased, suggesting that this prevention declines over time. Interestingly, other studies have reported an adaptive response of blood pressure and an enzyme adaptation in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism among the long-term effects of a high-fructose diet (Vraná et al, 1978;Mayes and Laker, 1986;Park and Meyer, 1992;Dai and McNeill, 1995;Takagawa et al, 2001).…”
